ABOUT HSHM
Home Sweet Home Ministries—impacting lives in Central
Illinois
This vision began when William “Billy” Shelper founded Home
Sweet Home City Rescue Mission in 1917. The original institution was housed
in a 75-seat warehouse at 233 E. Front Street in downtown Bloomington.
A slight name change and four locations later, Home Sweet Home Ministries
(HSHM) now occupies multiple buildings in Central Illinois and offers
a variety of services to individuals and families. We continue to expand
our programs to meet the needs of those who seek help.
Funding to support our programs is primarily
community-driven, through individual and organizational donations. Numerous
volunteers donate their time to help with meals, classes, and general
day-to-day activities.
“Now that I am in Threshold, I see
myself as a child of God. I have never been so happy in my life.”
- Vanessa, Threshold student

HOW YOU CAN HELP
Helping others succeed is a rewarding experience—why not
start now? There are many ways you can offer practical assistance to those
in need.
Volunteer time
HSHM relies on volunteers to keep its programs running smoothly.
There are countless ways to help, including lending a hand in the kitchen,
Receiving Center, or at the reception desk; leading a Bible study; teaching
a class or tutoring students; helping with building maintenance; assisting
with holiday activities; and other creative opportunities.
Donate food
Your donation will help feed children and adults at HSHM. We
accept perishable and non-perishable items, such as canned/boxed goods,
fresh produce, garden fruits and vegetables, or food left over from events.
Food donations can be delivered at the south door of our 303 E. Oakland
Avenue building.
Donate other items
Donate gently-used items to our Mission Mart at the Receiving
Center, located in back of the Bloomington Mission Mart. Visit our website
for current needs.
Contribute a financial gift
Annual or “anytime” contributions help keep our
programs active, and are greatly appreciated. All gifts are tax-deductible.
