It's in the cards: thank you notes & holiday greetings

The holidays are coming up, and although you may not appreciate the intense commercialism that tends to dominate the season, there's one activity that many of us voluntarily take part in: sending holiday cards to friends, family, and business contacts. I don't know about you, but I can't just buy a bunch of cards and simply sign my name. I have to write something inside, whether it's a detailed account of the years' activities (for family and friends) or a short note expressing my appreciation for business transactions (for clients). Since many of you are probably preparing to tackle similar tasks soon, you may find the following observations useful as you pen your own notes.

    Family & friends

Just because you're writing to Grandma doesn't mean your grammar should be sloppy. While loved ones probably won't be judging your character based on how you write, it doesn't hurt to take a minute to make sure words are spelled correctly and grammar is respectable. This is especially important if you include a lengthy description of the family's activities from the past year. Always double check your words, run a quick spell/grammar check if you're using the computer, or have a family member read over your note before printing or mailing final copies.

    Business contacts

What do you say to business acquaintances---folks who have supported your business throughout the year- --in your holiday cards? How about a simple "thanks for your business"? I make a point to send cards to all my clients. I don't just include the ones who have hired me to work on multiple projects---I also make sure I send a note to anyone who called me for a single job (no matter how small) and past clients who may not have needed my services at all during the year. Who knows-- something may come up in the near future, and I want to make sure they keep me in mind!

    Service personnel

Don't forget the folks who make life easier for you on a regular basis. How about your postal worker, who trudges (or drives) through snow, sleet, rain, and hot, humid summer days, 6 days a week, to provide you with important mail? Or the cleaning company that was able to take those nasty red wine stains out of your carpet? Other service personnel to send season's greetings to might include:

      Vendors at the office
      UPS/FedEx carrier
      Lawn maintenance service
      Paper boy/girl
      Veterinarian
      Plumber
Anyone else who has helped save you time, effort, or sanity during the past year!

And of course you don't have to keep in touch with personal and professional contacts just during the holidays. Sending a simple note or card anytime during the year is a great way to say "thank you" and "I appreciate you/your business." You can send these sorts of notes anytime---they'll always be appreciated!
